Situation: I took a cab home with a friend who I planned to drop off at her house. Minutes after leaving the cab she realized that she'd left her phone in the cab, and after dropping her off I called her phone. Cab driver called up and demanded $20 to get it back, telling me to meet him at the Union Square cab stand in Somerville MA. Couldn't talk him out of it, and ended up handing over the money to get the phone back. Not sure which I'm more annoyed at, the prick of a cabbie or my own ease of capitulation. Green and Yellow Cab had better respond to my inquiries.

I think you see it wrong. First, I'll give you an information: "Santa doesn't exist". Then, I'll tell you that once it happened to me too, to drop my phone in a lady's taxi that took me home from the MXP airport of Milano (Italy). I realized that after one hour, and I called my phone. The lady taxi driver answered after some time, and told me that she would have brought my phone at my home, but she was on the other end of the town, and I'd have had to pay the fare of the run. Which I found correct. And I said also many thanks to her, since she could have easily said nothing, and kept my phone.
On the contrary you must be living in the happy nation of Moronia, where taxi drivers most willingly lose time and money to bring the lost phones back to their absent minded clients, and after that take them out to drink as well. How good for you!

And be called an idiot by them, because you think that taxi drivers like to waste time around, bringing back the lost goods of their clients. On the contrary, time has a value for a taxi driver who's on duty, and it's called "fare".

cab company doesn't have to do anything. Cabs are rented by the driver for a daily rate. they run fares found and called out by the company and make the money to pay rental plus gas then anything left is into pocket in the end. so they rent a fully supported cab spot....the driver is independent. ...unless he uses the cab to commit crimes.....but he didnt steal anything, he just spent time not making fares to give it back.

Annoying. However, it's really her fault for leaving it in the cab and the driver is actually doing you a favor. $20 is a small price to pay to have a taxi drive your otherwise lost cellphone to you. Just pretend it's a person, because he's using the same amount of gas and time.
